The 7 Best Trends That we Should All be Thankful For

Trends are a fickle thing. Most pass by after a brief upswing, never to be seen again. Others come and go, enjoying resurgence however brief before settling back into the dust. Still others fade into the black recesses of Fashion Faux-Pas History, only surfacing again—usually years later—in some type of “Worst Trends Ever” list online.

This list is going to do the opposite. Instead of lamenting the horrible trends of Fashion Past, I’m going to showcase the delightful trends that are not only still prevalent and going strong this very day—but that we should all be thankful for.

If you ask me, the fashions and styles of the 2010s are some of the best ever. Besides a brief affair with frosted makeup and overly done brows a few years ago (hey, we can’t win ‘em all), beauty and fashion looks are more daring, more flattering, and more awe-inspiring, everywhere you go. Seen everywhere from celebs to runways to pop culture and beyond, these are some of the best looks in fashion and beauty that are common, yes, but nonetheless stunning. Chances are, you’ve tried more than a few of these looks yourself. If you haven’t, well now you have the comprehensive list!

¹Me, rocking all matte makeup, sandwiched between 2 of the more popular matte makeup products of our time²

Matte Makeup

I’ll start with one that probably everyone is familiar with. Between Kylie’s Lip Kits and the Naked Palettes, if you’re a beauty aficionado or just anybody with access to the internet, chances are you’ve seen matte makeup somewhere. In recent years, matte textures and finishes for makeup have had a long-awaited call-back from the 90s—but this century, mattes are bolder and more beautiful than ever before. Personally, I’m partial to matte lips. From ultra-wearable demi-matte to plaster-feeling, super-drying, mega-matte that won’t budge for at least 48 hours—matte lips reign supreme. Although there’s been a (debatably lamentable) resurgence of lip gloss in the trending beauty world, I have a strong feeling that matte lips aren’t going anywhere any time soon. I mean, think about it—you can wear absolutely any color you want in matte and it looks chic, luxe, avant-garde, or just straight Cool Girl. You’d be lying if you said you haven’t worn matte lipstick before, and I’d even bet my last hair tie that you have a favorite brand for matte lip products. What’s yours? On the cheaper side, I love Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color (I own every shade!) and NYX—Soft Matte Lip Crème, Lip Lingerie, and Liquid Suede. On the higher end, Stila has some great ones, (Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick) as well as Anastasia Beverly Hills, (Liquid Lipstick). Although I don’t own any, I tried them many a time when I worked at Ulta Beauty.

³Bralettes are so versatile. They can be dressed up, as shown here, or the most comfy, casual thing ever under a duster or cardigan!

Bralettes

Ah, bralettes. Every woman’s dream and savior. Or at least it should be. Or at least, it’s mine. You see, I gave up wearing bras a few months ago. I wasn’t sure what it was going to turn into when I started. A political statement? A stand for gender equality? A topic to write about on my blog? Turns out, it didn’t need to be anything…I just stopped wearing them and my life has never been the same. I still wear one when I go out in public, but at home, my bras never see the light of day. That’s just on the personal side, and kinda where bralettes come in. Bralettes are fun, cute little pieces of fabric, usually with a lacy, frilly design and in some darling color like classic black or elegant maroon red. But really, you can find a bralette in any shape, size, color, and design. You can wear it normally underneath your clothes as a more comfortable substitute for the original wire death trap, or you can layer it for the typical It Girl styling. You gotta admit—a peek-a-boo bralette underneath a jacket or a loose cut-out shirt is seriously effortlessly chic. My goal is to make the only bra I ever wear a bralette. And that’s just kinda cheating, isn’t it?

Just one of the many examples of my favorite K-Beauty products

K-Beauty

If you know me even a little bit, then you knew this was coming. I, like most of the Western beauty world, am obsessed with a capital O with K-beauty. What is K-beauty? Oh you sweet, innocent lamb…K-beauty stands for none other than Korean Beauty. Korea in recent years has come to be considered the unofficial hub of new, innovative, extremely effective beauty and skin care products and treatments…a lot of them are unique, some of them are silly-looking, and a large selection is very affordable! I’ve been told that Amazon is an amazing place to get some cheap K-Beauty. I love that now you don’t even have to go farther than your local Sephora or Ulta Beauty—or even CVS or Walgreens!—to get your K-Beauty fix. It’s becoming more widespread, popular, and therefore, more readily available for all people, everywhere! It’s amazing. And since I’m someone who subscribes to one of the popular Korean approaches to skin care (read about my 18 step nighttime skin care routine here!), this is probably one of the trends I’m the most delighted about.

⁴I honestly think that jumpsuits and other one piece garments are some of the most cool outfits you can ever wear

Jumpsuits

Speaking of being delighted about a trend! Ask anyone who knew me in my teenage years and they’ll tell you I had an odd penchant for one piece garments. I’m talking jumpsuits, rompers, even weird hybrid things that were halter tops attached to booty shorts…I know, I know, what was I thinking? But I rocked it! And in the Texas summer heat doing marching band camp… You’d be just like me, wearing one of those contraptions and slathering yourself in sunscreen with no shame in your game. But enough about me. Let’s keep talking about these jumpsuits. Now that we’re seeing cat suits even on the red carpet of prestigious, fashion-centric galas, I think it’s safe to say that the world is allowed to fully embrace one-piece all the time. I myself have quite a collection of them, and I personally love the feel of wearing one! I just feel so put-together and, well, cool. Going to the bathroom sucks but hey, as long as the stalls have doors, I’m good. Oops, you’re probably wondering why I specified that the stalls need to have doors. Well let me paint you a picture. My 21st birthday, I’m wearing a really cute black jumpsuit with no sleeves but wide, sweeping legs. My boyfriend and I went to a strip club to celebrate. I got drunk and had to pee every 3 minutes. There were no doors on the stalls! Luckily I was the only woman there besides the dancers so nobody came in and saw me. Until the last trip, of course, when a dancer walked in on me. Fortunately she was very friendly and cool about it. I still remember fondly, her name was *Jasmine and she was this gorgeous, tattoo-covered girl wearing a bright, Princess-Jasmine-blue bikini. That was fun. Wonder what Jasmine’s up to now…Lol, but I digress! Jumpsuits, rompers, cat suits, one pieces, they all get a thumbs up in my book.

Thigh High Boots

You’ll probably start to get tired of me soon, because this is yet another item on this list that is a personal favorite of mine. Please don’t start thinking that I’m making this up and only listing things that I like! Trust me, it just so happens that some divine power decided to reward my patience by finally making my personal fashion sense and tastes mainstream. At least, that’s the theory I’m running with. Anyways! Thigh-high boots are a thing, and they are amazing. From the classic suede and leather, to ones with cut-outs, or even see through (!), knee-high, thigh-high, and long boots are having a major moment, not even just in winter, it seems! I’m telling you, 14-year-old me is having a fit! (She wanted to wear these crazy futuristic, thigh-high, metallic silver stiletto boots to the Military Ball, thank goodness she didn’t.) Whether you’re wearing your boots with a skin-tight bandage dress or paired with some jean short-shorts, your legs will look long, and you will look stylish and sexy. Trust me on this.

⁶Everyone who’s anyone wears the athleisure trend. It’s pretty awesome, and hella easy to pull off!

Leggings and Athleisure

I will admit that I was one of those people who got annoyed at the athleisure trend when it first started to come to the mainstream. What was it like 5 years ago or something close to that? But that was also back when my skinny butt fit into any pair of jeans I came across, and before I started working out. Now that leggings are sometimes the only comfortable bottoms I can wear, and working out is equal parts necessity and cruel chore to me, I am absolutely loving this trend that everyone from Average Janes to big-name celebs have been sporting left and right. Best part about this particular style? It’s easy for anyone to pull off! Just dust the cobwebs off your bottom dresser drawer (I know you have one, we all have one), and iron out the wrinkles of your neglected workout clothes. Voila! Instant athleisure, instant trendy look. I personally love that leggings give me that defined bubble butt look that yoga pants did, but are more versatile and wearable. You can pair them with a loose sweater and some boots (see above) and be chic for a coffee run without any effort. Or you can just wear them to the store so people think you’re an active athleisure babe. Either way works.

Left: Me, long ago when I was really skinny, in one of my favorite crop tops. ⁷Right: A crop top I’d love to have! So casual… So stylish.

Crop Tops

Crop tops are by no means new but in recent years, they have seen a rise in popularity. Everyone is wearing crop tops, no matter your size, and I think that’s wonderful. Crop tops are now more than a staple, they are damn near a cornerstone of modern casual wear! You can wear crop tops with everything. Although my first foray into the world of cropped started with cropped tees paired with high-waisted jeans (not the worst look ever, mind you, but it could’ve skewed 80s—fast), these tiny little tops can be paired with everything from skirts to leggings, and look good everywhere from the gym to the coffee shop to the boardroom to the bar—well, you get the idea. I myself have an extensive collection of crop tops in every shape, style, and color, and because of my super sick giant colorful anime ribcage tattoo, I love wearing them. Now I just need to get back that washboard tummy… -sigh- a girl can dream.

So there you have it! Seven of the absolute best trends still going strong today! What do you think about this? Do you see any trends on here that should’ve been left out? Anything you disagree with? Anything you’re eager to try, or will never wear ever again? Let me know, I’m anxious to hear what people think about the trendiest fashion and beauty staples going on in the world today.    Sig H icon

Matte makeup, thigh high boots and crop tops are my all time favourites. Love them ♡
Also a request, you should do a review on some anti tan products as it is summer time and the sun is being really harsh to all our skins

Those are some of my all time favorites too 🙂 Thank you for reading and thanks so much for your comment, also your request! I’ll definitely be looking into doing something along those lines before long! I’m huge on sun protection/sunscreen so definitely keep an eye out for me talking about that at length. xxx ❤

Athleisure wear is one of my favourite trends. I used to never really wear anything sporty, but now I have an actual ‘sporty’ section in my wardrobe. The trends are all fab, although I have never owned a jumpsuit or thigh high boots! I have no idea why!! xx

Yeah I know. athleisure really hits you and sticks around, doesn’t it? And I feel like jumpsuits and thigh-high boots are both kinda those things that you see all the time and you’re like “man, that’s hot! I want that!” but then you never get it. Lol i literally had to force myself to finally buy boots and jumpsuits by going to the store and only buying those things! Walking out with like 4 or 5 at a time. No excuses for fashion! hahahaha
