Reviewing NYX Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder in Crushed Bloom & Synthetica
Hi there and happy Friday!
I have a very short and sweet post here for you today. This has been a long time coming, as I bought these products months ago and fell in love with them around the same time. But you know how it is… Life gets in the way and you never end up writing a review. I have it now, and that’s all that matters.
Today I’m going to be showing you a little product from NYX known as the Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder. You may know by now that I love NYX, especially their lip products. If you’re looking for great quality, a huge array of beautiful colors, and a small price, NYX is usually there for you. There are a few let-downs, as with anything, but this cool holographic highlighter is not one of them. In fact, it exceeded my expectations and is now one of my favorite highlighters to use.
Let’s start with the facts. According to the NYX Cosmetics website, “This breathtaking formula’s light-catching pearls deliver a luminous finish that looks different from every angle.” That is a completely true statement. This stuff literally changes color in the light, making sure that your highlight (or blush, should you choose to wear it that way) always coordinates and looks amazing. It’s actually pretty mesmerizing, which is all we mere mortals could ever hope to achieve, right? Mesmerizing makeup results? Yeah, you know what I’m talking about…
Crushed Bloom looks like a light purple in the package, but goes on like a pink and a bit of lavender. It’s honestly one of the most flattering shades I’ve ever seen, somehow managing to be sweet and flirty and sexy and pretty all at once.
Synthetica, besides having the coolest name ever, looks frighteningly flame orange in the package, but once applied, is more like a very hot pink/orange with blinding gold on top.
Honestly, it’s a little hard to describe these products and their colors and effects in a way that does them justice. But hey, magic is always hard to describe. And that’s exactly what these little $8 pieces of wonder are… Magic! I am having a difficult time painting an apt picture for you, so here’s a regular picture I took! I think this picture does the highlighters more justice than my words ever could.
Crushed Bloom didn’t catch the light as well but trust me, it is darling. Even in this pic, you can just tell how flattering it is. I have a very neutral-ish skin tone (blue and green veins, I can wear gold and silver jewelry, etc.), and as you can see, it blends in rather nicely with my skin tone. Just take that to mean that it’s a great color that can work on numerous different skin tones. I’ve seen a lot of reviews claiming that this product works just as well as a blush as it does a highlight, and I have to agree… But especially in the case of Crushed Bloom. It will give a very delicate but fetching, natural but shining, ultra flattering pink flush. Just use a light hand and blend, blend, blend into those apples and cheekbones.
And would you just look at that Synthetica? How something manages to be the perfect blend of pink, orange, red, and gold, and still be metallic, hot, and shiny, is beyond me. Synthetica is probably one of my favorite shades of anything, ever.
You can probably expect to see me post a lot of makeup looks using these two products, starting with this awesome Pink Summer Glow look using Crushed Bloom.
I would recommend using any kind of highlight brush to apply this stuff if you’re using it as a highlighter. If you want even more pigment and color payoff, use a finger to apply it directly to face. If you want to use it as a blush, use a small blush brush and blend it well over your apples and right underneath your cheekbones. Be warned that it can be a little difficult to see this product on your face if you’re not in natural light. That actually goes for the color as well as the shine. Either apply it while in natural light or just use a light touch and be careful.
I definitely wouldn’t mind collecting all 5 shades, not only because they are gorgeous and pigmented, but also to see what awesome color-changing effects they have in store for me!
Oh, wow… Even though I’ve talked about the awesome color-changing effects multiple times before, as I’m typing this I just realized what the “Duo” in “Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder” means, hahaha. I guess it’s time for me to take a breather so I can start thinking right. 🙂
To wrap this up: Amazing pigment, super cool color-changing effects, bright like a highlight but beautiful color for a blush, really cheap, seems to last awhile, 10/10.
So what do you guys think of this product? Have you ever tried it before? Will you now that I’ve shown you how awesome it is? Is there anything like it on the market that I should try next? Let me know in the comments down below, and as always, don’t forget to glow 🙂 (I just made that rhyme up!)
