Glowing Gold Makeup ~ Matching Eyes to Highlight Summer Makeup Trend

Hi there!

Happy Saturday, everyone! I hope your weekend is off to a splendid start so far! Mine has been pretty sunny, very warm, and overall happy. To celebrate, I’d like to continue showcasing my summer makeup trend: Matching eye makeup to highlight: Gold Edition!

If you saw my last post on this, the Pink Summer Glow Look then you should already know a little bit about my goals for this… Summer is all about heat, sun, dirt, sweating, etc. Yes there’s plenty of fun to be had and beauty to behold, but sometimes our makeup can suffer! Heavier makeup feels suffocating sometimes, our lip color can feather out, our makeup can melt! So what to do?

Personally, I like to go with the “less is more” approach to makeup in the summer. As such, I’ve developed this super easy, ultra flattering makeup trend, which is very simple but lovely. All you have to do is choose a shimmery shade for your lids, then pick a corresponding highlight! You can even use the eyeshadow as a highlighter if you want an exact match (this is a seriously good makeup hack I picked up sometime last year, although unfortunately I don’t remember where I read it, but seriously you should try it!)

This time, instead of sweet pink, we are going with a classic: Gold! Honestly, what says summer more than glowing gold like a goddess while you sit poolside? Gold looks good on most skin tones, especially since everyone is walking around all tanned in the warmer months. You can wear it during the day or night, although for night I’d recommend throwing on some eyeliner and maybe bronzer, too, just to glam it up.

For this look, I used the Maybelline 24K Nudes palette for the eyes. See the graphic above for the exact shade. Just brush it on your lids and throw on a generous bit of black mascara, and your eyes are all done! As you can see, it’s super flattering on brown eyes… It made mine shine brighter than they usually do! This palette is actually fairly pigmented (despite what I’ve read on a lot of reviews) and this burnished gold shade is probably the most pigmented of the bunch. It really doesn’t take much to get a nice even layer that shines in the light.

Speaking of shining in the light, for the highlight I used the e.l.f. Sunkissed Bronzer. I’ve had this for a while, hence why the label is completely rubbed off, but I haven’t used it a lot. Why? Well there isn’t really a reason… I like it a lot, and it makes an excellent highlighter. It looks dark and dull in the package, but, as you can see from my swatch, it definitely lights up on the skin. It’s a very subtle gold color payoff and slight shimmer, but it is definitely buildable (one morning I accidentally put like 10 layers of this on before going to the grocery store and I looked like a statue!). I would recommend applying this with a finger and skipping a brush altogether, because otherwise it just takes way too much time and too many layers to get the desired effect.

I will say that, even though I like this product, I’m not sure why it’s called a “bronzer”. As you can see on me, it isn’t dark at all. Definitely much better as a highlighter, even on the palest of skin.

Thanks for the read and comment, Kali! 🙂 I have seen mixed reviews on pretty much all of the Maybelline eyeshadow palettes but I have personally had good luck with them thus far, and I use them quite a lot (especially the Blushed Nudes palette) so I will recommend them ❤ xx
